City of Decatur, Alabama Green Waste Recycling System
All equipment and installation by Arasmith Manufacturing, Inc.
The heart of Decatur’s Green Waste Recycling System is an Arasmith Model 50-86 Hog. The hog's infeed opening is 86 inches wide by 62 inches tall which allows a wide variety of material to be processed including stumps, logs, pallets, demolition, etc.
An 84” wide x 41.5’ long vibrating conveyor with a 30’ loading area feeds material to the hog. The conveyor is loaded by a stationary 8000-lb. @ 20’ knuckle boom loader located adjacent to the conveyor and also by a wheel loader.
A metal detector installed in the conveyor causes it to stop when tramp metal is detected. The conveyor will not restart until the metal is removed, thereby greatly reducing wear and operating costs.
Material entering the hog is initially broken down by hammers located on the rotor and is then reduced to the desired size in the screen assembly. Our hogs provide a single-process reduction that produces a consistant material for use as a boiler fuel, erosion control, compost, and landscaping ground cover. The finished product is discharged from the hog directly onto a 36” wide x 55’ long pivoting stacking conveyor.
The hog also features a power-saving electrical system. Other components of the installation include radio remote controls, support structure, maintenance walkways and a shelter for the motor control panels.
As a safety feature, the infeed guard cannot be raised to perform maintenance on the hog until the main power circuit breakers are manually disconnected from the drive motors. The hog cannot be re-started until the guard is completely closed, the circuits are reconnected and the key switches engaged.
The equipment occupies an area of approximately 70’ x 83’ including knuckle boom reach and stacking conveyor.
